It happened in September of 2011. R.E.M. called it quits. Nobody expected that to be said, but it was and they did and now they're no longer.
Fans have been asking how long until they do decide to get back on stage, in the studio, to do something again as R.E.M. But it won't happen. It's not going to occur anymore because they aren't going to do it!
That's what Mike Mills said. The former R.E.M. bassist told Rolling Stone how it is and how it's going to be.
"There were no real factors other than deciding it was time to break up. There's no drug abuse. There's no in-fighting. There's no legal problems. It was time to break up. That's never really been done before.
He went on to say, "The idea of breaking up and not reforming for a reunion tour is kind of attractive to us," he added. "I doubt you'll see us touring as R.E.M. again. On the other hand, I just played with Peter in New York City the other night, so fun things do happen."

So that's how it stands, at least for now. It could change, but I wouldn't bank on it...
